Welcome to Calgary

Calgary is the largest city in the province of Alberta which is located in Western Canada. It is nestled in the Foothills of Canada’s Rocky Mountains and is home to many beautiful parks and rivers. The city is known for its friendly western hospitality and is a culturally diverse and thriving metropolis.

We Calgarians pride ourselves for living in a culturally diverse and vibrant city, with numerous festivals and events offered year-round. Calgary is known for the 10-day outdoor festival called the Calgary Stampede. The Stampede takes place in July and attracts tourists from around the world. This event contributes to the quality of life in Calgary and southern Alberta by promoting western heritage and values. In 1988 our city played host to the XV Olympic Winter Games and in 2020 we hope to welcome the world for the 11th Annual World Choir Games.

The climate in Alberta allows residents to enjoy the benefits of warm summers and colder winters.  Winter begins in December in Calgary, with spring coming at the end of March. Winters are cold and dry but fortunately we have regular Chinook winds that warm the city and give Calgarians temporary relief from the cold. The summer season is warm and dry and lasts from June until September.

Our varied climate and proximity to the breathtaking Rocky Mountains and other natural environments, allow residents and visitors to enjoy many summer and winter outdoor activities. In the winter, there are world famous locations to ski and snowboard around Calgary.

In the summer, the numerous national parks surrounding Calgary provide great opportunities to experience the natural beauty of the mountains. Camping, golfing, hiking, biking and mountain climbing are all popular activities. The nearby mountain resort towns of Banff, Canmore, Lake Louise and Jasper are destinations of choice throughout the year.
